the trout

introduction

when children get to a certain age, they know better. they often question every word their parents say, and every story their teacher tells is suspicious. they prefer to make their own realities, to live their own stories that are much more adventurous and interesting than yet another fairy tale they heard over 50 times already. so did julia, who loved exploring the tunnel of branches near the house where she and her family spent their vacation time. one odd day, she suddenly finds a trout in a puddle of water inside the tunnel. from that moment on, her adventure becomes a heroic story, about a little girl, and her big heart.

one of the first places julia always ran to when they arrived at their vacation house ingalwaywas the tunnel. it was a dark, moist tunnel made of smooth branches. she always enjoyed running through the darkness of the tunnel towards the light at the end of it. it felt like a trip through a haunted houseat a fun fair to her.

this year she had the extra joy of showing it to her small brother, stephen, and of terrifying him as well as herself. and for him, the fear lasted longer because his legs were so short that he was still screaming and racing while she had gone out for a long time already.

when they had run many times, they went back to their vacation house and told everybody what they had done. heboasted. shemocked. they squabbled.“cry baby!” “you were afraid yourself!” “you’re a big pig.” tears were threatening so dad said; “did you see the well in the tunnel?” she was twelve and at that age little girls are beginning to suspect most stories told by adults: they had found out too many, from santa claus to the stork.

how could there be a well! in the tunnel? haughtilyshe said, “nonsense.” but she went back, pretending to be going somewhere else of course, and found a hole scooped on one side of the tunnel, shroudedby ferns that she only uncovered it after much searching. inside there was water, in which she suddenly perceived a panting trout.

she rushed for stephen and draggedhim to see, and they were both so excited that they were no longer afraid of the darkness as they hunched down andpeeredat the fish panting in his tiny prison, his silver stomach going up and down like an engine. nobody knew how the fish got there.

her mother suggested that a bird had carried the spawn. her father thought that in the winter a smallstreamlet might have carried it down there as a baby, and it had been safe until summer came and the water began to dry up.

she went back to look again. her brother remained behind with mom and dad, not really interested in the actual trout but much interested in the story about the trout which his mummy began to make up for him; “so one day, daddy trout and mommy trout…”

it troubled her that the trout was always in the same position; he had no room to turn; all the time the silver belly went up and down; otherwise he was motionless. she wondered what he ate and thought of his hunger. she found him a worm. he ignored the food, and just went on panting. hunched over him she thought how, all the winter, while she was at school, he had been in there. all the winter, in the dark tunnel, all day, all night, floating around alone.

she was still thinking of it as she lay in bed. it was late june, the longest days of the year. the sun had sat still for a week, burning up the world. although it was after ten o’clock it was still bright and still hot. she lay on her back under a single sheet, trying to keep cool. before they went to bed her mummy had told stephen the story of the trout again, and she, in her bed, had resolutely presented her back to them and read her book.

“and so, in the end, this naughty fish got bigger and bigger and bigger, and the water got smaller and smaller…” she had whirledand cried, “mummy, don’t make it a horrible old moral story.” her mom had even brought in a fairy godmother, who had made it rain and filled the well, so that the trout could float away down to the river below. staring at the moon she knew there are no such things asfairy godmothers and that the trout, down in the tunnel, was panting for his life.“

she sat up. stephen was a hotlumpof sleep, lazy thing! she leaped up and quietly she lifted the ewerof water, climbed out the window and went in the tunnel. kneeling down in the damp, she put her hand into the slimy hole. when the body of the trout lashed they were both mad with fright. but she gripped him and shovedhim into the ewer and raced out to the other end of the tunnel down to the river’s edge.

the end

happy monday everybody. how are you? how was your two weeks without this special monday talk? i hope everybody is doing ok. i am doing fine myself.

i know the fine folks of beijing are enjoying a very very blue sky sunny day! mhm… as if the summer couldn’t get any better. we have been blessed with a beautiful blue sky day in beijing. so enjoy it! because …eh… i don’t wanna say just, yeah, but, eh… i am certainly not looking forward to the winter i wish it would just stay hot all year long. unfortunately i live in the cold canada. canada’s winters become very cold, and yeah. fortunately i’m not living in a location of the world that has hot weather all year around. but it’s ok. it’s ok, right?

you’re a product of your environment and some people say, “when you live in the cold weather cities, it builds a character, it makes you more stronger”. but i’m not sure that’s true.

anyway, speaking of being more stronger, how about the swimmer sun yang from china who is gaining a lot of gold medals at the asian games? are you guys following the asian games? the 2018 asian games? they are quite interesting. it’s like the olympics for all over the asian nations.

funny story. i, uh…i worked for the asian games when i was a reporter in south korea in 2014, the city of inchon, which is right next to seoul. in fact, if you’ve been to south korea, you are probably token airplane to inchon airport, it’s there most popular airport and in the 2014 they hosted the inchon asian games, and they hired a young reporter form canada who is me to cover their basketball events. so i was the basketball journalist for the 2014 asian games and it was a lot of fun, very very exciting.

so whenever the asian games come back, i think they happen every four years. i get very excited and it it creates nostalgia effect. but the nostalgia is the meaning of remembering something and feeling good about it. so that good feeling about remembering something of happiness, or you know, something that make you feel good, that’s nostalgia feeling. so whenever i see some news about the asian games, i get a nostalgia feeling because working at the asian games was very very interesting, it was a lot of fun, and it was a kind of a breaking point for my career.

before that i was just a blogger, i had my own website, but once i got the job from the asian games, i feel like my journalism career, it was a kind of launching pad, everything kind of happened from that big break. so that’s why i really do have the nostalgia effect for the asian games.

do you guys have any nostalgia effects sometimes? do you remember something that make you feel nostalgia? if you do. i’d love to know about it. if you can just leave a comment in the wechat comment section. let me know about your nostalgia feelings and i’ll certainly read the comment. maybe i can relate to this type of feeling with you.

anyway, august is, eh…i believe it’s the last week of august coming up. is that right ? i think after that it’s september. i don’t know about china. sorry, there are two weeks left to august now. after that, it is september. i don’t know about china. but september is a very important month for canada, because september is the month when students get go back to school. they get to go back to school. and, haha… wow. the students might not be looking forward to it. i know some of the parents are… some of the parents really like the idea that their children going to school, you know, getting the education. well, the students love the time off and being able to play all summer. it’s also important for the students to get their education.

so i want to know what was your favorite activity to do when you are on summer vocation? if you are parents, just kind of have that nostalgic feeling for me. and remember exactly what it was like to have the summer break from your school. and if you are a student listening to this program, by the way, we love students listening to this program, we, er… our goal is to educate and help, you know, the english speaking. so if you are a student and listening to this program, we thank you very much and answer this question for me. and write your question, err, answer in the wechat comment section. but the question is what is your favorite activity to do during the summer? is there anything that you look forward to doing? i know during the summer i often had the summer part time jobs, that is certainly nothing to feel nostalgic about.

but let me know in the common section below, what is your favorite summer activity when you’re a student, and i’ll be sure to get back with you next week with all of the answers and including a couple of activities that i did when i was a student during my summer break.

so that’s it for this week, that’s a very short one, we’re back on the regular schedule now, so i’ll be back next week, be sure to leave a comment in the comment section below with your favorite activity during the summer while you’re a student. and we’re going to make a great great dialogue next week where i’m going to read out your answers and then add my own experiences based on your answers. so, it’s going to be a lot of fun.

for everybody taking part in the dictation, the translation, thank you very much your hard work, it’s very very appreciated, always a big thank you to jingjing who’s in the studio working tirelessly, thank you very much. and we’ll see you next week. have an awesome week everybody. friday is aug 24th, we’ll be back on aug 27th for the brand-new show, but until then, so long everybody, have fun, bye.
